The Internet is a treasure trove of information and health products, with purchasing just a few short clicks away. Unfortunately, the easy access to pharmaceuticals can also lead to quick purchases without fully vetting the safety of the products you are purchasing.
In an effort to raise national awareness about fake Internet pharmacies and the health risks associated with them, the Food & Drug Administration just launched the “BeSafeRx: Know Your Online Pharmacy” campaign.
“Buying medicines from rogue online pharmacies can be risky because they may sell fake, expired, contaminated, not approved by FDA, or otherwise unsafe products that are dangerous to patients,” said FDA Commissioner Dr. Margaret Hamburg. “Fraudulent and illegal online pharmacies often offer deeply discounted products. If the low prices seem too good to be true, they probably are. FDA’s BeSafeRx campaign is designed to help patients learn how to avoid these risks.”In a survey by the FDA, they found that about one in four consumers have bought prescription drugs online. Almost 30 percent of them said they were not confident about the safety of buying drugs online. The FDA is telling consumers who buy prescription drugs online to follow these simple rules:
- Make sure the online pharmacy is located in the United States
- The site must require a valid prescription from a doctor or other health care professional
- The online pharmacy should provide a licensed pharmacist for consultation
- They are licensed by your state’s board of pharmacy.
Patients who undergo a bariatric procedure have a heightened need for supplementation after the operation. The reason being some patients may not be able to fully absorb the nutrients in their food or will have to avoid certain foods that don’t agree with them. By and large, this is a small trade off for all the major health benefits our patients receive as they begin to shed weight.
Keep in mind that the supplements bariatric patients take are usually over the counter. Prescription or not, quality is always of utmost importance to ensure both safety and effectiveness of the product. That’s why WeightWise Bariatric Program provides our patients with a comprehensive list of products, including vitamins and other supplements. Getting them straight from your weight loss doctor is definitely reassuring.
