Why Leave Lawton for weight loss surgery?

With a handful of dietitians, clinics, and at least 20 gyms in Lawton, you may be wondering why travel more than 90 minutes for WeightWise services? While 90 minutes may seem like a long drive, how much driving will you do when you visit a personal trainer, then to a nutritionist, and then to a clinic?

At WeightWise, we combine all of those specialists into one all-inclusive program. In addition to experienced surgeons, educated dietitians, and knowledgeable exercise physiologists, we will also assign you a patient advocate. Our advocates will be your support system, financial liaison, and personal cheerleader throughout the entire process.

So instead of thinking as if you’re leaving Lawton, imagine the trip as being the first step on the journey to your new life. Why would you go anywhere else?

Services available for Lawton residents

Whether it’s a gastric sleeve, switch, bypass, or band surgery, we will work with you to figure out which one will work best for you and your situation. Our commitment is to work on a one-on-one basis to help support your weight loss goals.

First, our surgeons will determine if weight loss surgery is the right option and then to help you discover which procedure will best support you on your weight loss journey. Our surgeries include:

Gastric Sleeve
Also known as a vertical sleeve gastrectomy, this procedure is popular because it reduces the size of a patient’s stomach without bypassing the intestinal tract. Gastric sleeve patients can achieve weight loss results like those that have gastric bypass, without intestinal rearrangement. This operation has less long-term complications requiring reoperation than other surgeries.

Gastric Bypass
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery is the most widely used weight loss surgery in the U.S. and can now be performed laparoscopically. This is a minimally invasive method that allows for quick recovery. Our patients have successfully attained healthy bodies and lifestyles through expertly performed gastric re-routing.

Duodenal Switch
An advancement on the widely-used gastric switch, this procedure is the most complicated, as it combines two surgical techniques: restrictive and malabsorptive. It can be performed through laparoscopy and allows the patient to consume less food which will result in weight loss over time.

Gastric Banding
This surgery, including the Lap-Band, is a laparoscopic procedure that uses an adjustable band to create a smaller stomach. This causes the patient to eat less food but feel full faster. The surgeon uses a silicone adjustable belt around the top of the stomach and adjusts the belt’s tightness during routine office visits to ensure maximum effectiveness. Patients generally use one to two pounds a week this way.

Lawton, OK, FAQs

Can I return to Lawton the same day after surgery?
Although Lawton is less than two hours away, we recommend all of our patients stay at least one night in town after surgery. However, that doesn’t mean you are confined to a hotel room for the rest of the day. Depending on the surgery, you will be able to return to daily activities almost immediately. Taking a walk, seeing a movie, or a little bit of shopping can all safely be accomplished.

However, there may be a small amount of discomfort and in the rare event of complications, it’s a good idea to be close by for observation. Additionally, you may consider arriving the night before to make sure you are well-rested for the surgery. We have a special partnership with SpringHill Suites in Oklahoma City, which includes special rates for our clients.

Once back home in Lawton, when can I start eating “normally”?
For the first two weeks, you will have to adhere to our strict diet. Any deviation from this diet can lead to less weight loss, complications, and even injury. There are a few reasons for this, including helping your body adapt to the procedure. The aim here is to train your body to want/need less food than it had before.

We really believe that bariatric surgery is just one step in the weight loss journey. Although many factors play a part in weight gain, what and how you eat is a major component. You will not be able to return to your pre-surgery diet, but we’re here to help. Our dietitians and patient advocates are here to help you set a healthy diet and stick with it.

How much of the surgery will insurance cover?
No matter if you have national insurance or Lawton-based coverage, we won’t know exactly how much will be covered until we see your plan. When you arrive for your first appointment, bring a copy of your insurance plan with you. You should be able to get one from your human resources department.

Once we have your information, we will have a better idea of what your insurance will cover. If you decide to become a patient of ours, WeightWise will assign you a patient advocate that will help with all of your financial questions. Visit our financial FAQ page for more information.

Do I really need surgery to lose weight?
There are many different ways of losing weight. For some, a change in diet is all they need while others spend 30 to 60 minutes a day exercising. A combination of the two is obviously ideal. As we’ve said before, there are a lot of reasons for weight gain and almost as many ways to lose weight.

Once you reach a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or more, long-term weight loss success isn’t as easy as taking the stairs or eating more vegetables. Without surgery, there has been no documented success of any treatment for more than three years. Of course, surgery is just the first step. A healthier diet and physical activity will also play a big part in losing weight and keeping it off.
