Why leave Tulsa, OK, for a weight-loss plan?

At this point, you may be thinking, “WeightWise offers everything I need, but why not find the same thing in Tulsa?” The answer is simple: no one in Tulsa, or the region for that matter, offers everything we do under one roof.

Our state-of-the-art facility and the wonderful team of experienced weight loss surgeons and specialists make our all-inclusive program stand out from other surgery centers in the area. Whether it’s a gastric sleeve, switch, bypass, or band surgery, we will work with you to figure out which one will work best for you and your situation.

Instead of referring you elsewhere for support after the surgery, we take care of that as well. Our knowledgeable dietitians will work with you to create a diet you can stick with, explain what foods or drinks to stay away from, and how it all works together for a healthier lifestyle.

Our exercise physiologists understand there is no one-size-fits-all workout plan for our patients. We work with each client to craft a specific program that takes the following into account:

  • Finding heart rate zones to maximize fat burning
  • Reviewing previous injuries
  • Addressing lingering back, hip or joint pain
  • Altering workouts as you continue to lose weight

And it all happens at WeightWise. We won’t send you all over Tulsa looking to fill in the weight-loss gaps. Our program will give you everything you need to for a new, healthier lifestyle.

Procedures we offer for Tulsa, OK residents

We are dedicated to supporting each patient while helping them reach their weight loss goals. First, our surgeons will determine if weight loss surgery is the right option and then to help you discover which procedure will best support you on your weight loss journey.

Gastric Sleeve
Also known as a vertical sleeve gastrectomy, this procedure is common because it reduces the size of a patient’s stomach without bypassing the intestinal tract. Gastric sleeve patients can achieve weight loss results like those that have gastric bypass, without intestinal rearrangement. This operation has less long-term complications requiring re-operation than other surgeries.

Gastric Bypass
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery is the most widely used weight loss surgery in the U.S. and can now be performed laparoscopically. This is a minimally invasive method that allows for a quick recovery: our clients often return to the usual day-to-day activities with a 24-hour period. Our patients have successfully attained healthy bodies and lifestyles through expertly performed gastric re-routing.

Duodenal Switch
This procedure is the most complicated, as it combines two surgical techniques: restrictive and malabsorptive. It can be performed through laparoscopy and allows the patient to consume less food which will result in weight loss over time.

Gastric Banding
Using an adjustable band to create a smaller stomach, gastric banding is a laparoscopic procedure that causes patients to feel full faster but eat less food. Our patients generally lose one to two pounds a week with this process. The belt is a silicone material the surgeon puts in place around the top of the stomach and is adjusted during routine follow up visits.

Tulsa, OK FAQs

I know I’ll look and feel better, but will weight loss surgery help prolong my life?
Yes! Studies have shown that obese or morbidly obese people that undergo weight loss surgery have a 25% to 89% survival advantage (fewer deaths) compared to those who don’t have the surgery. The largest improvements with bariatric surgery are seen with cardiovascular issues, such as heart attacks, heart failure, and strokes.

In one study, diabetics saw an amazing 92% survival advantage over an 8-year period. In addition to prolonging life, you’ll also be experiencing a better life. Injuries can be decreased, the time to heal will be reduced, and overall health will be improved. Weight loss surgery can improve other health conditions as well, such as sleep apnea, infertility, and hypertension.

When I return to Tulsa after receiving a gastric bypass, will I be able to eat like I used to?
No. If you think about it, your normal eating patterns led you to see us in the first place. Now, that doesn’t mean you won’t be able to eat some of the foods you love, but how you consume those foods will undergo massive changes. Smaller amounts of food will fill you up faster and hunger pains will quickly lessen.

While surgery is the first step in losing weight, we believe it is only one step. WeightWise believes weight loss is a whole-body process, meaning you must make physical changes as well as mental changes. Our staff will provide the support you need to accomplish both.

Tulsa isn’t very far away – can I return home the same day of the surgery?
While it may be tempting to make the short drive home, we highly recommend you stay at least one night in town after surgery. In fact, if you have surgery in the morning, you should consider staying the in town the night before as well. Being well rested and unrushed in the morning is a great way to relieve stress beforehand. SpringHill Suites in Oklahoma City offers special rates for our clients to make it even easier.

I have insurance through my Tulsa-based employer. Will my bariatric surgery be covered by that insurance?
We can’t answer this question without having knowledge about your coverage. However, many insurance plans recognize bariatric surgery as a health issue and do offer some, if not total, coverage. In some cases, the insurance company will require that specific steps must be taken after surgery, such as cutting out smoking, following dietary and exercise plans, and scheduling follow up visits.
