How to Make Water Taste Better After Bariatric Surgery

Staying hydrated after weight loss surgery is non-negotiable — but drinking between meals all day, every day, gets monotonous. Here are four easy ways to make hydration more enjoyable while staying completely on plan.

After bariatric surgery, your stomach pouch is too small to take in much fluid during meals, which means the majority of your hydration has to happen between them. Plain water is ideal, but if it's the reason you're falling short of your daily fluid goal, here are some simple, dietitian-approved ways to mix it up.

1
Add Fresh Fruit

Slices of lemon, lime, orange, cucumber, or berries can transform a glass of water into something genuinely refreshing. A few sprigs of fresh mint take it even further. The WeightWise dietitian team has some of their favorite fruit-infused water recipes on the blog if you need inspiration.

⚠ Important: Don't eat the infusing fruit. Post-bariatric surgery, whole fruit intake should be strictly limited — the flavor and antioxidants infuse into the water without the sugar load.
2
Drink More Decaf

Decaffeinated tea and coffee count toward your daily fluid goal and come in hundreds of flavors — herbal, fruit, green, red, and more. If you're used to reaching for a caffeinated beverage, this is a straightforward swap that keeps things interesting without the dehydrating effect of caffeine.

3
Add Low-Sodium Broth

If you lean toward savory over sweet, low-sodium broth is an excellent hydration option — especially in the colder months. It's warm, satisfying, and a welcome break from plain water without adding meaningful calories or sodium.

4
Use Sugar-Free Flavor Boosters

Sugar-free drink mixes and individual flavor packets can make a significant difference if plain water is the barrier standing between you and your hydration goal. There are more options than ever — powders, liquid drops, and cartridge-style flavor systems.

✓ Look for: Under 15 calories per serving, caffeine-free, no added sugar.
