One of the pillars of successful lifestyle change before and after surgery is exercise. Unfortunately, what most of our high-school gym coaches taught will not work for obese adults. Teachers and professionals often use the “work out harder to achieve better results” philosophy. This simply does not lead to success for the obese or morbidly obese patient.
Our physiologists utilize the “exercise smarter, not harder” philosophy of exercise. We have implemented state-of-the-art tools to find the best heart rate zones for maximum fat burning, requiring substantially less heart rate elevation than what is generally accepted. Patients often have significant back, hip or knee pain that limits exercise – our team can work with those limitations, not against them.
Our exercise physiologists are responsible for administering fitness assessments and metabolic testing for surgical and non-surgical metabolic program patients at WeightWise. Utilizing their experience and education, they are capable of prescribing individualized cardio, strength and flexibility programs for members and patients of all levels, based on fitness and metabolic assessments.
As you lose your weight leading up to and after your operation, your exercise program will evolve and expand to acclimate you to your increased strength and mobility. The ability to engage in more strenuous exercise is a great confidence boost for many patients. Remember, the benefit of exercise is equally important to the mind as it is to the muscles.
