If you have decided to undergo gastric sleeve surgery, you are likely preparing your next steps. This will include — in consultation with your care provider — familiarizing yourself with gastric sleeve pre-op diet recipes and recommendations.
Gastric sleeve (or vertical sleeve gastrectomy) is a weight-loss surgery that removes about 80% of the stomach. It is the most common bariatric procedure in the United States.
A smaller stomach translates to less food intake. This will help patients shed those unwanted pounds and put them on the track toward a healthier, more active lifestyle.
Gastric sleeve pre-op diet recipes are keys to success. Here are some things to keep in mind.
#1: Focus on protein
Having plenty of protein is important before you have surgery. Three times a day, make sure that you are eating protein that comes from good sources, such as nuts, salmon, chicken, eggs, or lean ground beef.
#2: Reduce your carbohydrate intake
Eating too many carbs means you are taking your body out of fat metabolism, which can increase carb cravings and slow down weight loss. Unfortunately, this is a common problem for people, so it is important to focus on reducing your calorie intake via carbohydrates.
Eliminate refined sugars from soft drinks or candy, and limit your intake of pasta, bread, etc. Your dietitian will provide you with a list of these items during your initial visit.
While these products are not completely bad, reducing the amount you consume plays a big part in your weight loss journey, including how successful your surgery and recovery are.
#3: Switch to liquids not required
Switching to liquids is not required in the WeightWise program. Patients have to lose a specific amount of weight prior to surgery. They may have to drink an all-shake diet to ensure they are at that goal weight.

We love helping people transform their lives through weight loss. Ask us for help with your meal plans to ensure that you stay on track with your diet. We can also offer sugar-free suggestions and recommendations for portion sizes (i.e., the amount of food you should serve yourself).
We want you to enjoy good health for the long term. Your pre-op and post-op diets play a huge role in your success and can help you avoid a recurrence of health problems. This is true regardless of the types of weight-loss surgery you’re considering in consultation with your doctor.
In fact, there are many types of bariatric surgery. Some remove part of the stomach; others reroute part of the small intestine (Roux-en-Y gastric bypass). With the proper diet and follow-up care, these surgeries can help with many health issues, including high blood pressure and sleep apnea. (See the National Institutes of Health for more info.)
