Your surgery day is on the horizon and chances are you are a combination of nerves and excitement. Once you have scheduled your weight loss surgery with our dedicated and experienced medical team at WeightWise, you have a new life to look forward to.
There are some important things to keep in mind before the day of bariatric surgery, however. This is especially true when it comes to the diet plan outlined by our surgeons. Here are some of the most important pre-operative diet requirements to keep in mind.
1. Every patient has a unique weight loss goal & personalized diet prior to surgery.
You will continue to follow the diet you are currently on until the day before surgery unless you have not met your pre-op weight loss requirement. We will work with you to answer your questions and help you with getting your individualized pre-op diet squared away so there is no confusion.
Your dietitian will provide you with a full fast diet if needed. It’s important to prepare your body for the weight-loss procedure (duodenal switch, gastric sleeve, or gastric bypass surgery), and the rest of your life.
2. You must meet your pre-op weight loss goal prior to scheduling surgery.
You cannot gain any weight between your pre-op appointment with the surgeon and your surgery day.
3. On the day before surgery, you can only drink clear liquids.
This includes a diet of only fluids such as water, brother, Propel, decaf coffee/tea, or sugar-free gelatin. These are easily digested and leave no undigested residue in your intestinal tract. Clear liquids can have some color, but you should be able to see through them.
Do not drink liquids that are blue, purple, or red and make sure you do not drink any protein supplements. No fluids after midnight are allowed. This liquid diet will continue for two weeks as part of your post-op diet, too. This allows your body to heal while continuing to build on the pre-op diet.
Any deviations to the surgery diet could put you at risk for complications. One of the reasons our patients come to us is because they need a lifestyle change, including diet. We do this by changing how our clients eat and drink, cutting out fatty or fried foods, and greatly reducing the amount of sugar they take in.
Before your surgery, you will meet with your surgeon and our staff at WeightWise to discuss what you can expect before, during, and after surgery. We are committed to the complete success of your surgery! Watch our FREE online seminar and discover why our program has been so successful.
