Now that you’ve had weight loss surgery, it’s time to establish a regular fitness routine to keep the weight from creeping back on. Gym memberships can be expensive and many times they go unused because, after a long day at the office, spending some time on your couch seems more appealing than going to a crowded gym.

Having a home gym can be a great alternative. Here are some at-home exercises as well as some equipment that should prove helpful in building your perfect home gym.

Establish a space

If at all possible, have a dedicated area for just workout equipment. You have many room options for where your gym can be. For example, a spare room or a portion of the garage can be great places to start. Consider decorating it with a unique fitness theme or deck the space out with a great sound system to help motivate you with tunes while you exercise. Essentially, you are creating a space that will be comfortable yet still energizing.

Walk, walk, walk

Want to catch up on your latest DVR recordings? Grab some supportive shoes, turn on the TV, and hop on a treadmill or stationary bike. No need to spend hundreds or thousands on a new piece of equipment, either – you can oftentimes find gently used treadmills or stationary bikes at garage sales, estate sales, or on local sites such as Craigslist.

If you’re not sure you want to invest in one of these pieces yet, simply walk in place. You might feel awkward at first, but don’t worry! It’s still great cardio, just crank up some upbeat music and get those legs moving!

Weight lifting is not only a great way to build muscle, but it will also keep your gym equipment shopping simple. Buy some barbells and dumbbells to lift on a regular basis. Search Craigslist, flea markets, classified ads, and other friends and families that may be getting rid of their sets. Dumbbells are especially great for chest workouts, shoulder workouts, and arm exercises.

After weight loss surgery, your primary goals should be twofold – eating well and keeping active. You don’t have to pay big money in gym membership fees if you don’t think you’ll be consistent in using it. Instead, focus on getting active in your home. You’ll likely be more comfortable and you’ll probably be more focused, too. Contact our team at WeightWise for other tips on staying active.
