Hormone imbalance is a very common condition in people around the world. Have you been diagnosed with metabolic syndrome and hormone imbalance? You may be wondering if BioTE® pellets can work for you.
What is hormone pellet therapy?
BioTE® pellets use hormones that come from natural plant sources. They are replicated to mimic the body’s normal hormone levels and they can be very effective in balancing hormones out. The implants, which are about the size of a rice grain, are placed under the skin and release small doses of hormones to keep levels sustained throughout the day.
Known as bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT), the pellets are natural and not synthetic, consisting of compounds of testosterone and estrogen. BioTE® pellets are more effective than synthetic hormone therapy because they replicate hormones that are already produced by your body.
BioTE® studies have shown the pellets to help with menopausal symptoms, heart disease, low sex drive, and other health concerns. Available for men and women, although the timelines differ a little bit for how often therapy is needed. Women receive pellets every 3-4 months while men are treated every 5-6 months.
Do BioTE® pellets help with weight loss?
BioTE® pellets have been shown to help with weight loss. Hormone pellets can help manage healthy body weight. They also offer a variety of other benefits, including:
- Increased energy
- Bolstered stamina
- Improved mood
- More muscle mass
- Effective depression management
- Regulated sleep cycle
Because of these things, patients who use BioTE® will have more energy and strength to stay active and lose weight. Not to mention, it can also help with mental acuity, which will give you the focus you need to help transform your lifestyle into one that is healthy, active, and motivated to see dramatic weight loss results.
For some, side effects include hair loss, acne, breast tenderness, and in some cases weight gain. This can be due to the testosterone replacement or estrogen levels calibrating. These side effects are the body trying to adjust to the therapy.
Work With The Experts
Our medical team at WeightWise is knowledgeable about BioTE® and can help answer your questions about this and anything else related to your weight loss journey. If you are currently undergoing estrogen or testosterone therapy, make sure to let our surgeons know during the initial consultation.
As medical professionals, it’s important that we know as much as possible about each and every patient. No two situations are exactly the same. The more we know about your history, your family history, and any injuries or therapies that may interfere with the surgery, rehab, and healthier new lifestyle.
This introduction will give us a chance to make sure weight loss surgery is right for a patient as well as giving our clients a realistic look at what the rest of life will look like. In many cases, the current lifestyle has led these patients to our doors. We want to make sure any procedure, such as the duodenal switch, gastric bypass, or gastric sleeve, is right for each and every client.
However, surgery is just one part of the weight loss puzzle. In some cases, it’s the easiest part. From this point on, successful patients will need to completely change their diet and activity levels to make sure they lose the weight and keep it off.
Before surgery, clients will spend time with one of our dietitians as well as an exercise physiologist to map out the next six months of their life. After surgery, as the body begins to adapt, very little food is consumed.
Even though most patients can resume normal day-to-day activities the day after surgery, the first two weeks are spent with hydrating fluids and liquid protein to allow for the overall healing of your stomach and intestines. Eating food or even gulping down water at this point could lead to discomfort, pain, or even injury.
Our exercise physiologist will outline an activity calendar for you during the months that follow a procedure. Designed to improve strength, flexibility, and stamina, patients start slow and then gradually increase in terms of duration and difficulty. Some WeightWise patients have even competed in marathons!
We are committed to our patient’s total health and wellbeing, and we know that weight loss is possible! Watch our free online seminar or contact us today to learn more or see if you are a candidate for bariatric surgery or hormone replacement therapy.
I would like to know how much it is for the pellets.

In my case, I was not told the blood work cost is additional as well as a couple of oral supplements that are necessary to take on a daily basis. There is additional cost to just the $350 for the pellet. Wish I had been told that by my doctor.
I have had problems with blood clots in the past, approximately 7-8 years ago in my liver and recently with superficial clots in my legs. Are there any risks taking the pellets with a history of clots?
I have a clotting disorder (2 DVTs in legs and a superficial in arm) and my doctor actually just suggested this for me. I have been looking into it.
Hey Nicolle! Great question! Pellets are the only form of hormone replacement that are safe in people with a history of clots. Pellets are excreted through the kidneys and do not cross the liver (unlike other methods of hormone replacement which do). When things cross the liver, it impacts clotting factors and that is why clots can happen, so there is not an increased risk of blood clots with pellets.
I’ve had 1 pellet, my 1st ever, inserted 4/26. I’ve had zero change in libido, which is zero, and now have a greasy face, irritability, and weight gain of 3 lbs..this is not what I was expecting. Will it get better??
Hey Randi! I would reach out to your provider regarding this question. They may need to do a follow-up, provide you with a booster shot, and/or redraw your labs and adjust accordingly.
Randi,
Same boat here 1st insertion 11/24 and no real change in libido and I feel boated. Did you get adjusted and have you seen improvements?
April
I have gained 8 pounds since on the pellets. I exercise at least 5 days a week. I thought the pellets help with weight loss?
Hi Laura! I would reach out to your pellet provider and speak to them. The type of exercise you do may impact your weight, too.
I am considering pellet therapy. Have you had patients who have had acne or hair loss after pellet insertion? If so what treatment do you suggest for that?
Hey Rebecca! Typically pellets increase hair growth rather than increase the risk of hair loss. Acne can be a possible side effect. However, the nurse practitioners that I work typically prescribe something to help with that and/or lower the dosage of the pellets as needed.
If I have had breast cancer, am I a candidate for the pellet?
Hey Suzanne! I would recommend scheduling a consultation appointment with one of nurse practitioners so that way they can advise and answer your questions appropriately. You can give our front desk a call at 405-844-3317.

Hi Suzanne, I had breast cancer also and have been on the pellets for about 4 months now. My practitioner prescribed me only the testosterone – not the estrogen hormone replacement, because of my cancer history. So far it has helped with a lot of my more severe menopause symptoms such as anxiety, depression, fatigue, hot flashes, mood, brain fog and insomnia. I would look into it if you think you would like to try it!
I am on a strict workout regimen while using creatine, with a large part of my diet being protein. Do the BioTE pellets have the risk of giving men gynecomastia like synthetic testosterone does, which I’m not using now? A large percentage of my workout involves hip flexion including heavy squats, leg press, and deadlifts, how do the pellets work with those movements? I am under 14 percent body fat, would it be harder, the same, or easier to maintain or decrease body fat while building muscle when using the pellets?
Hey Rob! I can answer a few of these questions. However, I highly recommend scheduling a consultation appointment you can give our front desk a call at 405-844-3317. The pellets can pop out since they go into the glute. We recommend that our patients wait 5-7 days before working out again after receiving pellets due to the incision and wanting everything to heal properly. The pellets are all natural, and I do not think they contain gynecomastia.
