Since the New York City Board of Health passed a ban on sugary drinks over 16 ounces (at restaurants and concession stands), there has been an uproar over the initiative and what role government has in regulating the foods we eat and drink.
While it’s not a stretch to say that Mayor Bloomberg has passed well into “Nanny State-dom,” one fact is undeniable, no matter what you think of the ban: America’s sugar habit has reached epidemic levels, spawning a myriad of health problems and taxing an already overburdened healthcare system.
But there’s another character in this healthcare drama besides consumers and public policy makers. Soda manufactures have only one responsibility: grow their bottom line and satisfy shareholders’ need for a return on their investment. To reach this simple goal, they are tasked with a similarly simple challenge: sell us as much soda as possible.
Is there that much of a difference between junk food and other addictive substances that are heavily regulated or even illegal? While no one would argue Coke is as dangerous as cocaine, there is scientific research that reveals high sugar intake and illicit drugs act on the brain in similar ways.
